Opening in 1982, Horticultural Supplies was established as a wholesale business to service hardware and garden centre outlets with packaged goods from the mainland to distribute throughout Tasmania. It was taken over by the current owner in 1991 and from there began expansion by entering into agreements with mainland companies to package their potting mixes and fertilisers for them. In May 1992 the production lines opened and Horticultural Supplies began bagging premixed fertilisers, composts and potting mixes for distribution to the Tasmanian market.
This move accelerated the businesses growth and in July that year moved the office and warehouse from Central Ave in Moonah to Lampton Ave in Derwent Park where the production line was situated. But in 1995, council pressure due to Country Bake bakery moving in next door, meant that we were forced to move the production line and all bulk materials out to Lyell Hwy in Granton (next door to Barwicks Pine Bark Wholesalers).
This did not turn out to be a bad thing, the move to larger premises for our production lead us to manufacturing our own mixes from raw materials and introducing new bulk products. We also moved into the supply of commercial grade potting mixes to nurseries and fruit & flower growers. This was possible due to better equipment and improved procedures at the Granton depot.
