Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) was established in 1872 on the site of the present facility. Since then it has grown and developed as the major referral health service for the region, servicing some 28 townships beyond the boundaries of the Rural City of Wangaratta with a catchment population of approximately 90,000 people.

NHW is a group B health service and is situated in the Hume Region which is one of nine Department of Health regions in Victoria covering an approximate area of 42,923 square kilometres and stretches from the northern fringes of Melbourne to the Murray River, from the Victorian Alps in the east to the Goulburn Valley in the west.

About Us

NHW provides services for public patients as well as private patients in the Hume Region.

The acute hospital provides a 24 hour/ 7 days a week Emergency Department service. Diagnostic services are provided on site through the Radiology, Pathology and Nuclear Medicine departments.

Other integrated healthcare services are provided such as; Acute, Sub-Acute, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Special Care Neonatal, Critical Care, Dialysis, Day Stay, Oncology, Adult Psychiatry, Aged Care, Allied Health, and a wide range of Community based programs.

Residential Aged Care

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) has a long history and commitment to providing quality residential aged care services to the local aging community.

Illoura Residential Aged Care replaces the existing 70 bed facility comprising of the PH Dicker and Matthew Rohan Wings located on Clark Street as part of the Northeast Health Wangaratta campus.

The facility was awarded top marks at ACHS accreditation in February 2006. Surveyors who reviewed every aspect of care and management, awarded NHW's service 44 out of a possible 44 outcome standards - a fantastic effort by all staff.

In 2005, NHW were successful in obtaining state government funding for the new facility.

Mental Health Services

The Older Persons Mental Health Service provides community based psychiatric assessment and treatment to persons over the age of 65 years living in North East Victoria. Assessment takes place within the person's environment, which may be at home, in a residential facility or hospital. All treatment takes place in a shared care arrangement with the treating General Practitioner, and family/carers.

The service provides support and education to residential facility staff who may have residents who display difficult or challenging behaviours. Education is also provided to other aged care service providers and GPs.

Mental health promotion for older persons is provided in cooperation with community based services committed to promoting healthy ageing.

Celebrating 140 years

The hospital in Wangaratta was established in 1872 on the current site and subsequently became known as the Wangaratta District Base Hospital (WDBH). This then evolved into the modern health service that we know today as Northeast Health Wangaratta(NHW).

When first opened, it was a 30 bed hospital for the poor and destitute, today it is a modern 228 bed facility, providing a range of healthcare services and is the major referral facility for numerous smaller health services in the region.
