Over a ten month period the Richardson House committee raised $140,000 for the erection of our Facility which was originally a retirement home built to prevent locals having to move away from family and friends in Barraba when they reached a point of being unable to look after themselves.
Advised at the time by the Department of Social Security that it was impossible for such a small community to raise the amount of money needed the committee dug their heels in and with the support of the community raised the funds required. With the assistance of the Governments $2 for $1 subsidy Richardson House was built and officially opened in 1983.
The facility has grown over the years from a hostel style environment where residents assisted with many of the day to day requirements to an “Ageing in Place” high care provider that employs 30 local staff injecting over one million dollars in wages into the Barraba Community as well as supporting several local businesses.
