About Us
The State-Owned company Tasmanian Railway Pty Ltd was established under the Rail Company Act 2009. The two shareholders are the Treasurer & the Minister for Infrastructure. A five person Board has been in place since 1st December 2009 to manage the company in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act and the various rules and Treasury Instructions that apply to State Owned Companies.

TasRail operates within the regulatory safety framework created under the Rail Safety Act 2009 (formerly the Rail Safety Act 1997) and administered by the Tasmanian Rail Safety Regulator.

The Company has its headquarters in Launceston, with a small presence in Hobart and Burnie. There are currently 192 employees (135 permanents and 57 labour hire personnel).

Ship Loading Facility

TasRail owns and operates the Burnie bulk storage and ship loader facility.

Our Future

To meet TasRail's objectives & Shareholder expectations, the Board & management have developed a comprehensive investment program proposal that addresses the under-investment of the past, & provides a foundation for growing the business going forward. The proposal is for funding that is in addition to the significant funds that the Tasmanian and Commonwealth Governments have already committed.

The proposed investment program is designed to address TasRail’s current safety and reliability issues by directing funding into:

  • General track, equipment & workshop upgrading
  • New locomotives
  • New wagons
  • Modern train control system
What's New
National Rail Safety Week

Each year, Australian and New Zealand rail operators, government bodies and police come together for National Rail Safety Week to promote rail safety in the community.

TasRail has launched two campaigns targeting level crossing safety & trespass in the rail corridor.

These campaigns have been developed to raise awareness of the very real and immediate dangers if people choose to illegally enter level crossings or the railway tracks.


What We Do
TasRail currently:
  • Operates up to 72 train services per week.
  • Over 2.5 million tonnes of bulk and containerised product via rail.
  • Has 34 active mainline and shunt locomotives.
  • Has 375 active bulk, container and service wagons.
